The History of AMD
Early History: Pre-1973
AMD was incorporated in 1969, on May 1st by Jerry Sanders (and seven co-founder), in the living room of one of the co-founders. In the same year, they moved to new offices in Sunnyvale, California. They also built their first Fab in 1969, and the first good die emerged: The Am9300. In 1970, the first proprietary product was introduced: The Am2501.
AMD also tested their products at their own expense, to very stringent Military Standards (MIL-STD-883). AMD went public in 1972, and by the end of 1973, they had created their own Volume-production overseas base in Penang, Malaysia. AMD itself boasted over 1,500 employees at this point, who were working on making nearly 200 products, many of them proprietary. This all combined together helped bring in nearly $26.5 million in annual sales revenue.
